I have little use for religion as it is practiced, or for astrology, or for belief in witchcraft or omens of good or ill-luck. I think they all stem from some insufficiency in men’s minds, perhaps from a lack of a willingness to feel themselves utterly alone. But now and then I feel that there is something beyond the material world, somethings we all feel intimations of but cannot explain. Underneath the religious vision there is the harsh fundamental reality of all our lives, because we know we must live and die as the animals we are. But sometimes I suspect that under that harsh reality there is a further vision, still deeper based, that comes nearer to true reality than the reality we know. Winston Graham
About This Quote

Many people do not believe in religion, but the things that religion tells them to believe about themselves and the world around them is actually not true at all. When religion is looked at objectively, it shows that religious people are just trying to fill a hole inside themselves. Religion teaches its followers to be satisfied with themselves and their lives because they know that they will inevitably die and pass on. They fear death and want to fill their lives with something beyond this life.

But if religion was the only thing in the world, and science and science alone were the only guide by which humans could live, science would clearly show us that our lives are not as important as we think they are. Religion tells us that our lives are not worth living if it is not filled with faith, but this is simply not true. Science shows us that the universe is cruel, but it also shows us that there is more beyond this life than can be explained by science alone.
